The Sonora High School girls golf team teed off its 2001 season with a 195-236 loss to Beyer in Modesto on Tuesday.

Heather Montanez (49 strokes to 45 strokes), Lindsey Bannwarth (56-44), Morgan Minners (64-54) and Lindsay Northrop (67-52) all lost to their counterparts from Beyer.

Despite the early-season setback, coach Karen Sinclair is expecting big things from her team in 2001.

Not only do the Wildcats return four players from last years 7-7-1 team, but mainstays Montanez and Bannwarth competed throughout the summer in the Tri-County Junior Golf Association.

(Montanez and Bannwarth) were beginners when they first came out, but theyve really worked at it, Sinclair said. Theyll be under 45 on the (nine-hole courses) because theyre very dedicated and strong and have the right attitude.

In addition to the four returning players who competed on Tuesday, freshmen Brittany Claveran and Mackenzie Dambacher will compete on the varsity.

Sonora will be shooting to improve upon its 7-6-1 Valley Oak League record, which was good for fourth place.

Wed like to be at least third or better at least .500, Sinclair said. But, we need experience. The other two (Northrop and Minners) didnt play all summer. That hurts.

The Wildcats will get some extra help in climbing the standings from Mountain Springs pro Mary Oliver, who will assist Sinclair in coaching the team this season.
