Oct. 29, 1927 — March 19, 2004

Longtime Sonora resident Loyd Carroll Culbertson died Friday at his home. He was 76.

He was born in Shelby County, Texas. He was an avid horseman and a member of the Los Alamitos Police Posse for many years while operating a horse stable and horse transporting business. He moved to the east Bay Area in 1976 and then to Sonora in 1983.

His family said he was well known and liked by everyone.

Mr. Culbertson is survived by his wife of 43 years, Deloris M. Culbertson; brothers and sisters-in-law Louis and Margarett Culbertson of Seattle and Bill and Madge Culbertson of Livermore; a son and daughter-in-law, Sam and Yvonne Culbertson of Chino, San Bernardino County; a daughter, Wanda Sue McEwen of Sonora; stepsons Bill Barnes of Sonora and Bob Barnes and his wife, Bobbie, of Seattle; a grandson, Michael McEwen of Los Angeles; and numerous step grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A memorial service is scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Tuolumne County Sheriff's Posse grounds in Jamestown.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Tuolumne General Hospital, Fireside Room, attn.: Long-Term Care, 101 Hospital Road, Sonora, CA 95370.

Neptune Society in Fresno is handling arrangements.

Palmer Herman

May 13, 1935 — March 5, 2004

Former longtime Coulterville resident Thomas "Tom Turkey" Palmer Herman died March 5 at his Virginia City, Nev., home. He was 68.

He was born in Michigan and lived in Coulterville for 30 years. He later lived in Virginia City for four years. He was a U.S. Navy veteran and had served near China, and was a lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a member of the American Legion and E. Clampus Vitus Matuca Chapter in Sonora.

Mr. Herman is survived by daughters Carlinda Jones of Mariposa and Shannon Silvia of Coulterville; sons Brian and Kevin; six grandsons; two great-grandsons; and a great-granddaughter.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph and Marge Herman.

A memorial service will be held by Thom Jenkins V.F.W. Post No. 9454 at 11 a.m. Saturday at the park in Coulterville. Burial will be at the Coulterville Cemetery at a later date.

FitzHenry's Funeral Home & Crematory in Carson City, Nev., is handling arrangements.

SANDERS — Billy Sanders, 67, of Groveland died Saturday at a Sonora hospital. Heuton Memorial Chapel is handling arrangements.

TERRY — Hayden Robert "Bob" Terry, 53, of Tuolumne died yesterday at Jawbone Station near Cherry Lake. Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

TRYON — Leona Katherina Tryon, 85, of Douglas Flat died Friday at a San Andreas hospital. Visitation is scheduled from 1-6 p.m. today at Angels Memorial Chapel. A service is scheduled at 11 a.m. tomorrow at the chapel.

VALVERDE — Grace Valverde, age unavailable, of Sonora died Friday at her home. Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

WOOD — Clifton Wood, 86, of Sonora died yesterday at a Sonora care home. Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

WALKER — Lonny Walker, 51, of Sonora died Friday at a Sonora hospital. Heuton Memorial Chapel is handling arrangements.
