Johnnie Lee Sturges

Jan. 24, 1947 — Nov. 5, 2003

Johnnie Lee Sturges of San Andreas died unexpectedly Wednesday at a San Andreas hospital. He was 56.

He was born in Valliant, Okla. He lived in Tuolumne and Calaveras counties for five years. He previously lived in Stanislaus County. He worked as a laborer.

Mr. Sturges is survived by his sons, Tim Sturges of Coos Bay, Ore., and Jeff Sturges of Oregon; daughters, Tammy Eaton of Oregon and Genevieve Pearson of Sonora; brothers, Boyd, Coy and Sam Sturges, all of Arizona, Joe Sturges of Anderson, William Sturges of Arkansas and Jimmy Sturges; sisters, Judy Rollins, Linda Jacobey and Bobby June, all of Arizona; and six grandchildren.

No services are scheduled at his request.

Ethel Verbeck

Sept. 28, 1914 — Nov. 7, 2003

Longtime Jamestown resident Ethel Verbeck died Friday at a Sonora hospital. She was 89.

She was born in Providence, R.I. She lived in Jamestown for 41 years.

She worked as a cosmetologist for 12 years and was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion auxiliaries.

She raised 17 foster children and taught Sunday school for many years. She also spoke four languages.

She is survived by her son, Frank Verbeck of Jamestown; daughters, Chris Abdallah of San Diego, Carol Kidwell of Jamestown and Velma Verbeck of Sonora; a sister, Dot Fransosi of Rhode Island; 14 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jess Le Roy Verbeck, in 1982.

Visitation is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. today at Heuton Memorial Chapel. A vigil is scheduled at 6 p.m. today at the chapel. A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. tomorrow at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Sonora. Burial will be at St. James Catholic Cemetery in Jamestown.

Judyth ‘Judy' Faye Brehn

Sept. 18, 1940 — Nov. 8, 2003

Judyth "Judy" Faye Brehn of Tuolumne died Saturday at her home. She was 63.

She was born in Sterling, Mich., and lived in Tuolumne for three years. She previously lived in San Jose from 1976-2000 and in Flint, Mich., until 1972. She worked as a dental assistant for 30 years. She and her husband taught dancing and choreographed country and western dancing, including J-Walking and D.C. Express.

Her family said she enjoyed bowling, gardening, keeping house and especially her grandchildren.

Her husband said she was a great dancer.

She is survived by her husband of 33 years, Jerry Brehn of Tuolumne; a son and daughter-in-law, Joe and Tammy Holzer of Las Vegas; daughters and sons-in-law, Jean and Dean Elliott of Tuolumne, Jenifer and Tyler Tayrien of San Jose and Kathy Velez of Puerto Rico; grandchildren, Josh and Jake Holzer, Jeanniemarie and Teresa Archambolt, Trenton Tayrien, Jessica, and Margo and Adrien Elliott, all of Tuolumne, and Kathiria, Stephanie, Issacc and Veronica Velez, all of Puerto Rico; a great-granddaughter, Kayla Nicole Holzer of Nevada; a brother and sister-in-law, Jim and Carol Navidonski of Flushing, Mich.; and a sister and brother-in-law, Janice and Gary Hagenbuch of Standish, Mich.

A memorial service is scheduled for 2 p.m. tomorrow at Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home's Tuolumne Chapel.

David Anthony Leonard

June 6, 1949 — Nov. 7, 2003

David Anthony Leonard of Columbia died Friday at a Sonora hospital after a short illness. He was 54.

He was born in Merced and lived in Columbia for three years. He previously lived in Angels Camp. He worked at Calaveras Glass and Calaveras Asbestos for many years.

Mr. Leonard is survived by his fiance, Pandora Salazar of Sonora; a daughter and son-in-law, Tara and Robert Riede of Sonora; a brother and sister-in-law, Jim and Melicent Leonard of San Jose; a sister and her fiance, Faye Leonard and Daniel Stringer of Mountain Ranch; parents, Archie and Joan Leonard of Angels Camp; and a nephew, Jeremy Leonard.

A funeral service was to be held at 2 p.m. today at Angels Memorial Chapel. A family gathering is scheduled at the Angels Camp Gun Club after the service. Burial will be at the Altaville Protestant Cemetery in Altaville.

Cornelius ‘Neal' Charles Gallagher

Jan. 14, 1918 — Nov. 8, 2003

Cornelius "Neal" Charles Gallagher of Sonora died Saturday at a Sonora hospital. He was 85.

He was born in Pittsburgh, and lived in Sonora for 17 years. He worked as head clerk for the Southern Pacific Railroad for 30 years. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He previously lived in Fremont for 33 years.

His family said he loved gardening.

Mr. Gallagher is survived by his wife of 62 years, Bessie Gallagher of Sonora; and four sisters, Mary Readal of Polk, Pa., Anna Holden of Bayonet Point, Fla., Nora Baldoff of Hermitage, Pa., and Elizabeth Gaspar of Butler, Pa.

No services will be held at his request.

PETTIT — William "Jerry" Pettit, 89, of Sonora died yesterday at a Sonora care home. Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

SWANSON — Irene Swanson, 95, of Calaveras County died Friday. A funeral service is scheduled for 10 a.m. tomorrow at Angels Memorial Chapel, which is handling arrangements.

TELESE — Shirley Telese, 55, of Jamestown died yesterday in Jamestown. Heuton Memorial Chapel is handling arrangements.
