Violet Bradley

Aug. 3, 1920 — Aug. 29, 2003

Violet Bradley of Sonora died Friday at her home. She was 83.

She was born in Victoria, B.C., and lived in Sonora for four years. She was a homemaker for 63 years.

Her family said she loved watching old movies.

She is survived by her sons and daughter-in-law, Fred Bradley of Sonora, Mike and Kay Bradley of Fremont, and Richard Bradley of Las Vegas; a daughter and son-in-law, Teri and George Van Buskirk of Sonora; two granddaughters, Claire and Joy Bradley, both of Fremont; and three grandsons, Ben and Lucas Bradley and Jon Van Buskirk, all of Sonora.

No services are scheduled.

Fred Hardy

Nov. 6, 1926 — Aug. 28, 2003

Longtime Sonora resident Fred Hardy died Thursday at a Sonora hospital. He was 76.

He was born in Massachusetts and had lived in Sonora since 1961. He worked as a chief lab technologist for 26 years at Sonora Community Hospital. He was a former member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church.

Mr. Hardy is survived by his wife of more than 58 years, Luella Hardy of Sonora; a son and daughter-in-law, David and Judy Hardy of Sonora; a sister, Millicent Dunn of Maryland; and five grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, Donald Hardy.

A memorial service is scheduled for 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 27, at the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Sonora.

Virginia Spaulding

Sept. 6, 1922 — Aug. 26, 2003

Virginia Spaulding of Sonora died Aug. 26 at a Riverbank care home. She was 80.

She was born in California and lived in Sonora for five years. She lived in Mariposa for more than 65 years. She worked as a clerk for the Mariposa Drug Store and various other stores, and had been a member of the Methodist Church in Mariposa.

Her family said she enjoyed her family, gardening, crocheting and knitting, and was known for her love of her cats and dogs.

She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Jim Spaulding of Sonora; a son, Sam Spaulding of Mariposa; two daughters and a son-in-law, Mary Donaldson, and her fiance, Ray Rusche, both of Sonora, and Charlotte and Tom Berryman of Sparks, Nev.; eight grandchildren, Tom Sullivan, Debbie Hansen, Rainee, John and Frank Berryman, Ginger Martin and Sonja Spaulding; and 14 great-grandchildren.

A private family memorial was held.

Shirley Sanford ‘Sy' Lucas

March 7, 1906 — Aug. 20, 2003

Shirley Sanford "Sy" Lucas of Sonora died Aug. 20 at his home. He was 97.

He was born in Dallas, S.D., to Sanford and Lenora Lucas. He grew up in South Dakota and Nebraska, where he worked many jobs, but spent most of his life as a cowboy, farming and ranching.

He married Lena Thomsen on July 28, 1930, in Crookston, Neb. They raised two children, Shirley and Stanley. In 1955, they sold their last farm and moved to California. At the age of 50, Mr. Lucas began a career in locksmithing, and he founded Foothill Locksmiths in Hayward, a business now managed by his son, grandson and great-grandson.

After his wife died, he retired at 81 and moved to the mountains. He spent many hours on hobbies like woodcarving, inventing tools and story-telling, his family said. His family said he was noted for the stories he told of his long and adventurous life. He had a wonderful sense of humor and a love of life, they added.

He married Clemo Millard on Feb. 12, 1994, in Sonora.

Mr. Lucas is survived by his wife, Clemo; a daughter, Shirley; a son and daughter-in-law, Stanley and Gayleen; stepchildren and their spouses, Tom and Carol, Frances and Gilbert, Diane and Saundra; stepniece Melinda, and her husband, John; five grandchildren, including Blaine, Cathy, Janet and Diane; a step-grandson, Curtis; 11 great-grandchildren; five great-great grandchildren; nieces and nephews; and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Lena, in 1985, shortly before their 55th wedding anniversary; his parents; and siblings, June, Ken, Len, Richard, Buck and Maureen.

Services were held.

A rosary will be held at 7 tonight at the chapel. A Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. tomorrow at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Angels Camp. Burial will be at St. Patrick's Catholic Cemetery in Murphys. Angels Memorial Chapel is handling arrangements.
