A 22-year-old man died early this morning when his car ran off Highway 120 near Groveland and hit several trees.

The man's name was not released this morning pending notification of his family. According to a California Highway Patrol report, he was from Pullman, Wash., but may have family living in Groveland, said CHP spokesman Brad Schultz.

CHP Officer Eric Homme said in his report that the accident occurred about 1 a.m. on Highway 120 at Sprague Road East, east of Groveland. The man was driving east in a 1989 Oldsmobile Cutlass when, for unknown reasons, his car left the north side of the roadway and hit several trees, the report said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

There was no indication this morning of the cause of the accident, Schultz said

The accident brings the fatality accident count so far this year up to 10, with a total of 15 people killed, Schultz said. That's more than double the number of accident fatalities for the same period last year.
