Churning butter, making rope and drinking from tin cups were not a thing of the past last week at the annual Columbia Diggin's at Columbia State Historic Park. Thursday through Sunday, the tent camp east of the park's lower parking lot was transformed into an 1852 mining town. As visitors walked through the town, they could shop at the mercantile store, play games at the saloon, watch an Old West court hearing or get a shave. Volunteers in period costumes also acted along — getting in arguments about the high cost of water and mining for gold. A group of students from San Francisco challenge Bea Sutherland, known as "Big Bertha," in a game of "Shut the Box."
