Chester Everett Conner

Aug. 23, 1923 — April 24, 2003

Sonora area resident Chester Everett Conner died Thursday at a San Andreas convalescent home. He was 79.

Mr. Conner was born in Sacramento. He lived in the Sonora area the past year and a half. He lived for 10 years in White Salmon, Wash., and about 35 years in Ventura, where he worked as a ceramic tile setter while raising his family.

Mr. Conner was a staff sergeant in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He served in the European and Pacific theaters and was involved in 43 missions as a tailgunner.

He loved woodworking at his home.

Mr. Conner is survived by his wife, Evelyne Conner of the Sonora area; son, Dennis C. Conner of Eugene, Ore.; two daughters, Darlene Massey of Sonora and Diane Oleson of Apple Valley, Minn.; two brothers, David Conner of Klamath Falls, Ore., and Orville Conner of Albuquerque, N.M.; and five grandchildren.

A military honors service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery in Gustine.

Fred Day

Oct. 1, 1912 — April 24, 2003

Longtime Altaville resident Fred Day died Thursday at a San Andreas hospital. He was 90.

Mr. Day was born in Mountain Ranch and lived in Calaveras County his entire life. He lived in Altaville about 30 years. He also had lived in Mountain Ranch, Angels Camp and Murphys.

Mr. Day worked in heavy construction and was a truck driver. He served as the only police officer in Angels Camp in the 1950s.

He loved the outdoors, and specifically hunting and fishing, his family said. He was a member of the Teamsters union.

Mr. Day is survived by a son, Dan Day of West Point; two daughters, Donna Bailey of Altaville and Nancy Wheeler of Farnhamville, Iowa; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

A family service and inurnment will be private.

Edward I. Gerick

Jan. 4, 1916 — April 22, 2003

Former Murphys resident Edward I. Gerick died Tuesday at a convalescent home in Soulsbyville. He was 87.

Mr. Gerick was born in Vallejo. He lived in Murphys for 12 years and had recently moved to Soulsbyville.

He worked as foreman of sheet metal fabrication at Beale Air Force Base in California.

Mr. Gerick is survived by his wife, Agnes M. Gerick of Murphys; a son, Edward Martin Gerick of Incline Village, Nev.; two sisters, Francis Beckstead and Cecelia King, both of Vallejo; and four grandchildren.

A private family service will be held at a later date.

Sara Ellen Keeley

Sept. 22, 1951 — April 16, 2003

Former Jamestown resident Sara Ellen Keeley died April 16 at a San Antonio hospital after an accident at her home in Round Top, Texas. She was 51.

Mrs. Keeley was born in San Francisco and grew up in Mill Valley, Marin County. She earned a degree in early childhood development.

Her family said she had a great love for the well-being of all children.

She met her husband, Chuck, in Chico. They were married April 24, 1976, and soon after moved to Sonora, where they ran their own business, Brookside Wood Products.

Mrs. Keeley served as director of the Amador-Tuolumne Community Action Agency Head Start program. She also held other jobs with the program.

She was a six-year member of the Jamestown School District Board of Trustees. She also was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Sonora.

In 2000, Mrs. Keeley and her husband moved to Round Top, where she worked for the Round Top Chamber of Commerce.

Mrs. Keeley was preceded in death by her father, Martin Rosse.

She is survived by her husband, Chuck Keeley of Round Top; daughter, Emily Keeley of Modesto; mother, Jean Rosse of Greenbrae, Marin County; a sister and brother-in-law, Suzie and Chuck McCulloch of Berkeley; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Peter and Patty Rosse and Eric and Jennifer Rosse, all of Hawaii; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be Saturday, May 10. A time and place has yet to be set. Call Emily Keeley at 551-1545 for details.

JONES — Edgar Jones, 80, of Hathaway Pines died early this morning at a Sonora hospital. Heuton Memorial Chapel is handling arrangements.

KENFIELD — Ted Kenfield, 77, of Vallecito died Thursday at his home. Angels Memorial Chapel is handling arrangements.

RICE — Visitation for Clyde Rice will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. tomorrow at Heuton Memorial Chapel.
