Some 165 women — each in a purple outfit and red hat — joined for a fashion show and lunch yesterday in Sonora's Opera Hall. Representing more than a dozen chapters of the Red Hat Society, the women came to the downtown Sonora hall in their bright, if offbeat, garb, which they wear for all club functions. The society is a social club for women older than 50 and bases its philosophy on the principles of Jenny Joseph's poem "Warning," about what she plans to do as an older woman. In the poem she speaks of wearing red and purple, eating pickles for a week and doing other things many people would consider odd or out of character for older women. While most chapters were from Tuolumne and Calaveras county, there was one chapter — the Scarlet Ladies — who traveled from Brentwood for the event. Nina Collins, a Banyan Tree employee, was the emcee for the event.
