Sonora High School couldn't come up with a key hit and was blanked 4-0 by first-place East Union of Manteca in a Valley Oak League baseball game at Bev Barron Field yesterday.

The Wildcats (5-7, 0-3 VOL) put two runners on in both the sixth and seventh innings, but Lancer pitcher Ryan Fleckenstein escaped both jams — the first when Justin Hart's line drove was caught at second base and turned into a double play, and the second with a game-ending strikeout.

"If Justin's ball would have fallen in ..." Sonora coach Mike Silva said.

Fleckenstein finished with a six-hitter while striking out six and walking none. Louis McColloch pitched the distance for Sonora, allowing five hits while fanning three and walking five.

Travis Hendrix had two of Sonora's hits, and Ryan Taiariol and Nick St. Hillaire drove in runs for East Union (10-1, 3-0).

Sonora travels to Manteca tomorrow to play Sierra (7-6, 2-1) at 3:30 p.m.

Sophomores — The Wildkittens (9-2, 3-0) beat East Union 8-2 at the Sonora Dome. Tyler Doig pitched a complete game, allowing six hits and only one earned run. At the plate, Joel Whitney went 2-for-3 with a double, a triple and three runs scored; Dennis Kavie went 2-for-3 with two runs batted in; Ryan Roberson went 2-for-4; and Doig was 2-for-5. Roberson anchored the defense at shortstop.
