Bullfrogs post big baseball win

Travis Emerson hit two home runs and Anthony Bennett pitched a complete game as Bret Harte High School posted a big 6-3 baseball victory over Amador yesterday on the Bret Harte diamond.

The Bullfrogs (6-3, 2-0 Mother Lode League) defeated the three-time defending champion Buffaloes for the first time in Heath Lane's five years as coach, and put Amador (3-5, 1-1) a game behind in the early stages of the 15-game league campaign.

Bret Harte goes for sole possession of first place tomorrow at co-leader Linden (6-2, 2-0), with the first at 3:45 p.m.

The Bullfrogs will have ace Sean Nelson rested and ready for that game because of Bennett's fine performance against Amador. The junior right-hander allowed six hits while striking out two and walking one. Amazingly, Bennett had 10 assists and he induced the Buffaloes to hit comebacker after comebacker.

Appropriately, he got the final out on one with the tying run in the on-deck circle in the person of David Cooper, who had hit a bolt of a solo homer off the scoreboard in left-center field in the top of the sixth.

But Emerson, Bret Harte's senior catcher, was the homer hero of the day. His two-run drive to left-center in the bottom of the second inning tied the game 2-2 after Amador had scored twice in the first. He hit a solo shot in sixth that dwarfed the first homer (and Cooper's, impressive as it was), landing 75 feet deep on the upper field well behind the fence.

"It was crushed," Lane said.

Ken Baptista hit a solo homer in the third for a 3-2 lead, Bennett hit a clutch, two-out, run-scoring single for a 4-2 lead in the fifth, and Brian Kane doubled home a run in the sixth to compliment Emerson's massive homer.
