Crews make changes to turn lanes

Crews yesterday repainted turn lanes at the Greenley Road and Mono Way intersection, completing a project approved by the Sonora City Council in February.

In January 2002, the council followed a traffic consultant's study indicating that two dedicated left-turn lanes and a third lane for through traffic and right turns would be the most efficient way to handle traffic in the busy intersection.

However, after a number of complaints from the public, City Engineer Gerard Fuccillo recommended changing to one left-turn lane, one lane for left turns or through traffic, and one lane for right turns only.

Both northbound and southbound Greenley Road will have the same configuration.

Changing the lane use required reprogramming the traffic signal computer, repainting lane arrows and installing new signs.

When Sonora Regional Medical Center opens this summer on Greenley Road, the configuration could undergo another change depending on the effect of the added traffic, City Administrator Greg Applegate said in January.
