MODESTO — Lindsey Smith went 5-for-5 with a double to highlight the Tioga High School softball team's 23-4 non-league victory over Big Valley Christian yesterday.

Breanna Bodine got the pitching victory for Tioga (2-2), striking our five and walking six in the four-inning game against a team of all freshmen and sophomores.

In its previous game, visiting Tioga won 22-6 over Stockton Christian in the Mountain Valley League opener.

Shelbi Bodine and Smith both went 4-for-5 and Jennifer Flores 2-for-4. Bodine drove in four runs and Smith and Flores three each.

Breanna Bodine was the winning pitching in that one, too.

The T-Wolves face a tougher test Tuesday, when Elliot Christian of Lodi comes to Leon Rose Field in Groveland for an MVL game at 3:45 p.m.

Summerville softball

A lack of offense cost the Bears a 4-0 defeat at Linden in their Mother Lode League opener yesterday.

Starting pitcher Jessica Aubrey went the distance for Summerville (2-4, 0-1 MLL), striking out 10 while allowing two earned runs on five hits and six walks, but was bettered by Linden pitcher Liz Egerman.

Egerman gave up just two hits (both to Liz McLoughlin), and was helped by Summerville baserunning mistakes in the second, third and fourth innings while throwing the complete-game shutout.

"(Egerman) had a good changeup that kept us off-balance, but we only struck out five times," Summerville coach Ben Watson said. "This was a Linden team we could beat, but we just didn't play well enough."

Summerville entertains Calaveras on Wednesday at Standard Park, with the first pitch scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
