Sonora High School began its Valley Oak League swimming season yesterday with easy girls' and boys' victories over Pitman of Turlock at Sonora Pool.

The defending-champion girls won 133-12, while the boys prevailed 140-36 over the Pride, a new school which was swimming the first meet in its history.

A girls' highlight was Alison Gourley swimming a lightning 50-yard freestyle relay split of 24.03 seconds, a personal best by more than two seconds. No one could at first believe the swiftness of the time, especially for the first meet.

"I triple-checked," Sonora coach LaDeane Hansten said.

Gourley also posted Sac-Joaquin Section qualifying times while winning the 100 butterfly (1:07.06) and the 100 breaststroke (1:15.36).

Also, Katie Baier swam a Sac-Joaquin Section qualifying time of 25.86 while winning the regular 50 free, Melisa Hough swam qualifiers while taking the 200 free (2:08.50) and the 500 free (5:41.24), and Kristi Calbert qualified while winning the 200 individual medley (2:29.78) and taking second in the 100 breast (1:17.97).

Freshman Corynne Guthrie swam a frosh-soph qualifying time in the 100 fly (1:11.93), while Becky Clinite got one in the 100 breast (1:19.88). Clinite, a sophomore, was named girls' swimmer of the meet by Hansten.

Guthrie and fellow frosh Jillian Hunt tied for first place in the 100 backstroke (1:13.55), frosh Patty Allen won the 100 free (1:03.58), and Sonora swept the 200 medley, 200 free, and 400 free relays.

Lauren Rogers, Calbert, Cammy Fumar, and Gourley took the medley (2:10.46); Allen, Shannon Connant, Fumar, and Gourley the 200 free (1:55.15); and Rogers, Fumar, Hunt, and Lisa Watts the 400 free (4:24.95).
