The Summerville High School and Mother Lode Christian baseball teams opened their seasons yesterday by playing to a 1-1, six-inning tie on the Summerville diamond in Tuolumne.

Mother Lode pitcher Stephen Baldwin (12 strikeouts, nine walks) nearly no-hit the Bears, yielding his first hit of the game to Jacob Loewen with two outs in the bottom of the sixth.

Loewen stole second base, advanced to third when the throw to second sailed into center field and scored on a passed ball, tying the game.

The Cougars took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fifth inning when Cory Henson reached on an error, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt, and scored on a single by Josh Neal.

Summerville pitchers Travis Ford, Bubba Fristad and Dillon Ray threw two innings apiece, combining for 10 strikeouts and five walks while allowing two hits.

Summerville opens the three-day Modesto Christian tournament at 2 p.m. Thursday against Turlock Christian at Ripon High School.

If the Bears beat Turlock, they'll play at 4 p.m. Friday at Modesto Christian. If the Bears lose on Thursday, they'll play at 2 p.m. Friday at Modesto Christian.

Mother Lode will visit Wilton Christian on Saturday.
