The girls got a top-four seed and the boys got invited to the party, so life is good at Bret Harte High School with the Sac-Joaquin Section Division IV basketball playoffs ready to begin.

The Bullfrog girls (18-10), who won the Mother Lode League championship, open tomorrow night at 7 at the Bret Harte gym against 13th-seeded Hughson (10-13), the fifth-place team from the Trans-Valley League.

If Bret Harte wins, it'll be home again Thursday in the second round against either No. 12 Summerville (12-9), the MLL's fourth-place finisher, or No. 5 Orestimba of Newman (18-7), the runner-up in the Southern League.

The semifinals are Wednesday, March 5, at Tokay High in Lodi, and the championship game is Saturday, March 8, at noon at Arco Arena in Sacramento.

If the Bullfrogs win their first two, they're almost certain to run smack into top-seeded St. Mary's (24-3), the sandbagging Stockton school that plays Division I all season and then drops down for the playoffs (because of enrollment) so it can go for state championships against legitimate Division IV teams.

St. Mary's easily beat Bret Harte in the section finals in both 2000 and 2001.

The Bret Harte boys (11-17) got the No. 15 — next-to-last — seed despite losing their last four MLL games. The Bullfrogs travel for a first-round game Wednesday

night at 7 against second-seeded Hilmar (24-3), the TVL champion.

The teams played a close game in the Hilmar Tournament in December, with the Yellowjackets winning 57-51.

The winner of the rematch plays a second-round game Friday against either No. 8 Marysville (19-10) or No. 10 Calaveras (16-9), the latter Bret Harte's archrival.

The semifinals and finals are the same dates and places as the girls, with the title game at 3:30 p.m.
