Voter signup deadline is today

Today is the last day to register to vote in Calaveras and Tuolumne counties for the June 3 primary.

People can register online at through midnight or find voter registration forms in any post office or at county election offices.

The form must be turned in to county election offices by 5 p.m. or postmarked today to be registered to vote in time for the June 3 primary.

No documentation is needed to register, just basic personal information and either a driver’s license number or last four digits of your Social Security number, according to Rebecca Turner, elections coordinator for Calaveras County.

Elections that could be decided in the June 3 primary include Calaveras County Board of Supervisors District 3 and 5, Calaveras County Sheriff, a pair of Calaveras County judgeships, two seats on the Sonora City Council, the Tuolumne County Board of Supervisors District 2 seat, and the Tuolumne County Assessor-Recorder.

Also on ballots: A primary featuring three candidates for the U.S. Congressional seat held by Tom McClintock, a primary election for the State Senate seat held by Tom Berryhill, and two state propositions, 41 and 42.

The local elections are decided next week if a candidate gets more than 50 percent of the vote. Otherwise, the top vote getters head to a November runoff. The sheriff and city council seats will be decided in the June primary.

The federal race — in which Republican McClintock is challenged by Republican Art Moore and Independent Jeffrey Gerlach — will be settled in November when the top two vote-getters square off.

The state Senate race, where Berryhill is challenged by Fresno Democrat Paulina Miranda, will automatically go to the Nov. 4 general election.
