She passed to the Lord on Feb.18, 2014, at the age of 89 years at her home in Confidence, Calif. She is survived by three of her four children: James (Jim) Payne, of Confidence, Calif., Linda Payne of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, and George (Jeff) Payne of South San Francisco, Calif., granddaughters, Michelle Goodspeed, of Woodside, Calif., Christina Apodaca, of Stone Mountain, Ga., and two great-grandsons.

Her husband, George E. Payne predeceased her in 1976; and son, Rick Payne, of Woodside, Calif., predeceased her in 2007.

Marilyn was the sole survivor of her birth family of nine children.

After graduating high school in Grand Junction, Colo., in 1942, she, mother Ingrid, and two sisters moved to San Francisco, where she met her future husband, George, while working at Postal Telegraph. They were married on Feb. 15, 1944, in Lompoc, Calif., before George was shipped to Saipan during World War II.

She was active at Trinity Lutheran Church in San Francisco, singing in the choir, and served on the Board of Directors until moving to Confidence in 1983 where she resided until her death from lung cancer and advanced emphysema. Her son, Jim, and Hospice of the Sierra provided care over the final few months.

She worked for Bank of America in San Francisco for 24 years and for H&R Block for eight years after moving to Confidence.

She was a founder of the Twain Harte pinochle club and played until a few months before her death.
