Police still investigating pot smoking incident

Sonora Police Chief Mark Stinson said Wednesday his department is still investigating a campus marijuana-smoking incident involving three Sonora Elementary School third-graders, as school and county probation officials figure out what, if anything, to do with the students.

The Tuolumne County Probation Department, meantime, is awaiting a report from the Police Department before taking over the case.

Chief Probation Officer Adele Arnold acknowledged the challenge of handling a case involving children so young, as did school officials.

The county disciplinary systems in place are geared toward older juveniles, like high schoolers.

Children under 14 are typically not punished for crimes like these, she said.

Arnold said her department would probably offer some type of “intervention” service for the students and their families.
