David ‘Wayne’ Hess

Nov. 25, 1936 — Feb. 3, 2014

Sonora resident David “Wayne” Hess died Monday at his home. He was 77.

Mr. Hess was born in Mesa, Ariz., to Ernest and Addie Hess, of Sonora. 

He married Marian Westmoreland in Greeley Hill.

He worked for the U.S. Forest Service and later felled timber for different companies.

Mr. Hess later owned and operated Tuolumne Tree Service for 15 years. He retired as a long haul truck driver.

He enjoyed gardening, hunting and traveling in the mountains.

Mr. Hess was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers. 

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Marian Hess, of Sonora; his children and their spouses, Daniel and Michelle Hess, of Sonora, Aaron and Michele Hess, of Sonora, John and Valerie Hess, of Soulsbyville, Esther and Roy Lilly, of Grass Valley, Rachel and Tim Townsend, of the Lake Tulloch area, and Victoria Hurley, of Modesto; his sister, Ruth Osborne, of Jamestown; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Chapel in the Pines, 18580 Cherokee Drive, Twain Harte.

Robert Irwin

Dec. 23, 1930 — Feb. 3, 2014

Sonora resident Robert Irwin died Monday at his home. He was 83. 

Mr. Irwin was born Dec. 23, 1930 in Oceanside, San Diego County, the son of Mable (VanHorn) and Robert M. Irwin.

Mr. Irwin served in the U.S. Marines during the Korean War.

He married Jean M. Schulte on Dec. 22, 1956, in Rio Linda.

He attended Oregon State University and earned a degree in forestry in 1958. 

He worked as a forester in California for 35 years and settled in Sonora 31 years ago.

He was a member of and contributed to the National Museum of Forest Service History. 

Mr. Irwin was preceded in death by his parents and wife of 56 years.

He is survived by his children and their spouses, Robert M. Irwin and Carol Woods, of Sonora, Linda and Paul Gehres, of Arnold, and Dana and Jeff Fox, of Fort Bragg; and three grandsons, Ross Irwin, of Sonora, James Franklin, of San Francisco, and Jefferson Franklin, of Wyoming.

Memorial donations can be made to the National Museum of Forest Service, P.O. Box 2772 Missoula, MO 59806, or Hospice of the Sierra, 20100 Cedar Road North, Sonora CA 95370.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Heuton Memorial Chapel, 400 S. Stewart St., Sonora. A burial will follow at Mountain Shadow Cemetery.

Randolph Glenn Nicks

April 20, 1943 — Jan. 30, 2014

Former Sonora resident Randy Glenn Nicks died Jan. 30 at his Modesto home. He was 70.

Mr. Nicks was born in Benton Harbor, Mich., the son of Glenn and Dane Nicks.

He moved to California as an infant with his family.

He graduated from Sonora High School in 1961. 

Mr. Nicks served in the U.S. Navy from 1964 to 1968. 

He lived in Modesto for more than 50 years, where he owned a local freight handling company. 

Mr. Nicks enjoyed being a member of CrossPoint Church community. He also enjoyed sports, reading and listening to jazz music. 

Mr. Nicks was preceded in death by his mother; his stepbrother Dan Quayle; and a nephew, Sean Quayle.

He is survived by his father and stepmother, Glenn and Dorothy Nicks, of Jackson; his sister, Pamela Campion, and her husband, Pat, of Pleasanton; stepsister, Lynn Quayle, of Sonora; stepbrother, Tom Quayle, and his wife, Diana, of Placerville; sister-in-law Carol Quayle, of Camino; and many nieces and nephews.

Memorial donations can be made to CrossPoint Church.

A memorial celebration will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at CrossPoint Church, 1301 12th St., Modesto.

The Neptune Society is handling arrangements.

GUIDI — Alice Mae Guidi, 93, of Angels Camp, died Monday at Avalon Care Center in Sonora. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, 820 S. Main St., Angels Camp. Angels Memorial Chapel is handling arrangements.
