Tuolumne and Calaveras counties are very strange places.

That’s according to this month’s issue of Hemispheres, the in-flight magazine for United Airlines. Its list of 24 of the “strangest things to do in 2014” features both the Calaveras County Fair and Jumping Frog Jubilee, to be held May 15 to 18 in Angels Camp, and the Poison Oak Show, scheduled for Sept. 27 at Columbia State Historic Park.

The list highlights two unusual events from throughout the world per month. Events for January, for example, are the No Pants Subway Ride in New York City and the Australia Day Cockroach Races.

For the month of May, the Frog Jump shares the honors with the Waikiki Spam Jam — a Spam-themed festival in Hawaii.

The write-up for the Frog Jump calls the county fair a “well-disguised literary festival” in reference to Mark Twain’s “The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County.”
