James ‘Leonard’ Daniel

Aug. 26, 1930 — Dec. 20, 2013

Longtime Sonora resident James “Leonard” Daniel died Dec. 20 at his home from complications of a lung injury believed to have been caused by a severe reaction to smoke from the Rim Fire. He was 83.

Mr. Daniel was born in Kansas, the fifth of eight children born to Ralph and Damie Daniel. 

He grew up in Arizona and graduated from Duncan High School.

He moved to Sonora in the early 1950s and was employed at Western Auto Store, owned by his brother, Roland Daniel. He later worked at Montgomery Ward before opening his own appliance repair shop.

He married Gert Grossman in 1969. 

Mr. Daniel was a lifelong fisherman and hunter. He volunteered with the Department of Fish and Game and was a hunter safety instructor for many years. 

He was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, the Italian-Catholic Federation and two RV clubs. 

He donated and planted a pickup truck bed full of daffodils, which he dug from his own property, at the Highway 108 entrances to Twain Harte, with help from his cousin, Bob Hargrove. 

Mr. Daniel was born with a rare blood type and donated more than 8 gallons to help others.

He enjoyed gardening, reading western novels and looking after a flock of birds on his property.

He enjoyed traveling. He and his wife went on many camping and backpacking trips across the United States in the early years of their marriage. After retiring, they went on several cruises to Mexico, Canada, Hawaii, Alaska, the Northeast and the Panama Canal. They spent a few winters in Arizona.

Mr. Daniel was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Elvin and Roland Daniel; and sister, Jean.

He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Gert Daniel, of Sonora; siblings, Vivian Skipper, of Sonora, Anita Stockton and Wilma Stockton, of Arkansas, and Bill Daniel, of Arizona; his children and their spouses, Sandy Grossman-Morris and Robert Morris, of Brentwood, Brenda and Darrel Rerucha, of Fresno, Jim and Martha Grossman, of Sonora, Cindy Hatler, of Sonora, and Debby and Jack Frost, of Bay Point; 12 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.

A celebration of life Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, 127 W. Jackson St., Sonora. A reception will follow at the parish hall.

Alberta (Holland) Bowcutt

Jan. 25, 1933 — Jan. 2, 2014

Sonora resident Alberta (Holland) Bowcutt died Jan. 2 at Sonora Regional Medical Center’s long term care unit. She was 81.

Mrs. Bowcutt was born in Modesto, the daughter of Gladys and Howard Joseph Holland.

She worked as a merchandiser for a greeting card company for 30 years. 

She enjoyed gardening, arts and crafts, fishing and cooking. 

Mrs. Bowcutt was preceded in death by her infant daughter, Diana Louise Bowcutt.

She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Boyd Bowcutt, of Sonora; her children and their spouses, Deborah and Jimmy Spillers, of Oakley, Joanie and Joe Long, of Tuolumne, and Butch and Julie Bowcutt, of Modesto; her sister, Naomi McNeely, of Sierra Village; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Heuton Memorial Chapel, 400 S. Stewart St., Sonora.

Patricia (Parkos) Hall

July 16, 1956 — Jan. 3, 2014

Groveland resident Patricia (Parkos) Hall died Jan. 3 at Doctors Medical Center in Modesto. She was 57.

Mrs. Hall was born in Merced, the daughter of Laura Helen (Jensen) and John Dale Parkos.

She was a homemaker and settled in Groveland six years ago. She enjoyed sewing and antiquing.

Mrs. Hall was preceded in death by her parents.

She is survived by her children, Lili Powell, of Groveland, Kara Izzo, of Anchorage, Alaska, and Emalee McCoy, of Jamestown; her siblings, John Parkos, of Florida, Chantil Davis and Kathleen Miles, both of Valdosta, Ga.; her grandchildren, Joshua Baker, of Anchorage, and Addison McCoy and Avery McCoy, both of Columbia.

A funeral was planned for noon today at Heuton Memorial Chapel, 400 S. Stewart St., Sonora.

Rhoda C. Wohler 

Sept. 25, 1925 — Dec. 31, 2013

Crystal Falls resident Rhoda C. Wohler died Dec. 31 at Sonora Regional Medical Center. She was 88.

She was born in North Dakota, the daughter of Esther and Carl Johnson.

She married Lowell Wohler on June 30, 1943, in North Dakota. They moved to California and lived in the Bay Area for a number of years before retiring to Crystal Falls in 1990.

She worked at El Camino Hospital in Mountain View for more than 30 years before retiring. 

Mrs. Wohler volunteered with the women’s auxiliary of the Crystal Falls Fire Department.  She was also a past president of the American Legion and worked with the Girls State program. 

She also volunteered with Interfaith Community Social Services ministries. 

Mrs. Wohler enjoyed sewing, crafts and canning vegetables. She made quilts for her family members and enjoyed participating in craft fairs. 

She also enjoyed spending time with family and friends. 

Mrs. Wohler was preceded in death by her mother, Esther Hanson; father, Carl Johnson;  brother, Charles Johnson; and sister, Kathy Russell. 

She is survived by her husband of 70 years, Lowell Wohler, of Crystal Falls; her sons and their spouses, Dave Wohler, of Vacaville, Jim Wohler, of Diamond Springs, and Ryan Wohler and his wife, Judy, of Salida; grandchildren, Jeff and Marlene Wohler, of Montana, Derek and Carol Wohler, of Vacaville, Lars and Michelle Wohler, of Vacaville, Lori and Bobby Emerick, of Sacramento, Ron and Tina Wohler, of Modesto, Christopher Wohler, of Ceres, and Kelsey Wohler, of Modesto; eight great-grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; her siblings, Wallace “Delayne” Johnson, of Saratoga, Darrell “Tommy” Johnson, of Escalon, Janice Bates of San Jose, and Jean Overby of Oakdale; and numerous nieces and nephews.  

A memorial will be held at noon Saturday at the Crystal Falls Clubhouse. 

The Neptune Society is handling arrangements.
