Summerville’s Andrew Brennan wrestled his way to the championship Friday and Saturday at the No Guts, No Glory tournament at Natomas High School.

Over 50 teams competed.

The 132-pound senior entered the event as the top seed, then promptly backed it up.

Brennan received a first-round bye then whipped his first opponent by technical fall (15-0). In Round 3, he pinned Johnny Whitworth, of Del Campo, at 2:24. Brennan advanced to the final with a 10-3 decision over Edward Dillegas, of Arroyo.

In the championship match, Brennan caught Dillegas in a near-side cradle and it was lights out just 1:32 into the match.

“Andrew was really good this weekend,” said Bears head coach Jordan DePaoli. “He was in control and wrestled with the lead. He wrestled relaxed and he’s tough to beat when he gets the lead.

"His defensive takedowns this weekend were exceptional and he dominated all his opponents from on top. This is a big-time confidence builder for Andrew.”

Bears 138-pounder Zach Marquez also earned the praise of his coach after winning three of five matches.

“For a freshman to go in there and win three matches in a pretty tough tournament is outstanding, “DePaoli said.

Also for the Bears, Devin Conklin went 2-2 in the 120-pound weight class, Jed Glazier went 2-2 at 145 and Elisha Flores earned a victory at 195 pounds.

The Bears will next wrestle in the Bulldog Classic on Saturday at Turlock.
