Joseph Dean Lingo

April 18, 1971 — Sept. 2, 2013

Tuolumne resident Joseph Dean Lingo died Monday at Sonora Regional Medical Center. He was 42.

Mr. Lingo was born in Sonora to Karen Marie Lingo.

He grew up in Tuolumne and attended Summerville High School.

He worked various jobs including laborer, fireman and coach. He was a “Jack of all trades” according to his family.

Mr. Lingo lived in Nashville, Ark., for 15 years before returning to Tuolumne in 2008.

He enjoyed hunting, baseball and the outdoors as well as traditional native Me-Wuk dancing.

Mr. Lingo was preceded in death by his grandfather, Joseph Edmond Lingo, in 1987; nephew, Sly Chance Guinn, in 1998; and niece, Rikki Ray Guinn, in 1998.

He is survived by his mother, Karen Marie Lingo, of Tuolumne, his grandmother, Mildred Nona Hawkins, of Tuolumne; his siblings and their spouses, Thomas Lee and Sandra (Hall) Lingo, of Nashville, Ark., Tricia Ann Guinn, of Tuolumne; nieces, Leslie Leann Lingo, of Nashville, Ark., Chelsea Kay Guinn, Haley Marie Guinn, and Eva Louise Foster, all of Tuolumne; nephews, Joseph David Guinn, of Tuolumne, and Russel Thomas Allan Foster, of Sonora; and one great-niece.

A celebration of life will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Tuolumne Rancheria Tribal Hall, 19595 Mi-Wu St., Tuolumne.

Edwin Louis ‘Ted’ Manuel Jr.

July 29, 1949 — Sept. 1, 2013

Murphys resident Edwin Louis “Ted” Manuel Jr. died Sunday at his home. He was 64.

Mr. Manuel was born in Stockton to Mary Anne (Ahearn) and Edwin Manuel Sr.  

He moved around before settling in Calaveras County 30 years ago, where he had spent much time as a child. 

He worked several different jobs throughout his life, but he primarily sold insurance for 20 years. He was also an organic farmer and sold vegetables at a stand at his home.   

His family described him as a talented and competitive athlete. Mr. Manuel enjoyed mountain biking and hiking, surfing, snowboarding, playing ping pong, fishing and farming. 

He also enjoyed speed reading and collecting books, especially books about history.

Mr. Manuel was preceded in death by his parents. 

He is survived by his children, Ezra Manuel, and his wife, Kristy, of Alabama, Tyler Manuel, of Washington, and Shannan Manuel, of Nevada City; sister, Laura Carner, of North Carolina, and grandchildren, Zoey Manuel and Ethan Manuel, of Alabama.

A funeral service will held at noon Saturday at Angels Memorial Chapel, 1071 S. Main St.,  Angels Camp. A potluck celebration of life will follow at 2 p.m. at Murphys Park, 505 Algiers St.

Angels Memorial Chapel is handling arrangements. 

Van Steven Rea

Feb. 12, 1948 — Aug. 21, 2013

Former Tuolumne County resident Van Steven Rea died Aug. 21 at his home in American Canyon. He was 65.

Mr. Rea was born in Missouri to Wanda and Mendle Rea. 

He served in the U.S. Army from 1970 to 1976.

After his military service, he earned a teaching degree from San Jose State University in 1976. 

He taught for the Twain Harte-Long Barn School District for 30 years before retirement.

He settled in American Canyon a few years ago.

Mr. Rea enjoyed coaching volleyball and time spent with his students. He also enjoyed the San Francisco 49ers and Bruce Springsteen’s music.

Mr. Rea is survived by his wife of 43 years, Gail Rea, of American Canyon; his daughter Dana MacMillian and her husband, Ian, of American Canyon; grandson, Kai MacMillian, of American Canyon; and his father, Mendle Rea, of Vacaville. 

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Humane Society of Tuolumne County, P.O. Box 830, Jamestown, CA 95327.

Private family services have been held.

Twin Chapels Mortuary in Vallejo handled arrangements.

BISCHERI — Judith Bischeri, 70, of Valley Springs, died Wednesday at Mark Twain Medical Center in San Andreas. A memorial service is planned for 2 p.m. today at San Andreas Memorial Chapel, 254 W. COOK — Lawrence “Larry” Cook, 66, of Sonora, died Aug. 22 at Sonora Regional Medical Center. A celebration of life will be held at noon Sunday at the Old Corner Saloon, 574 Main St., Copperopolis. Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home is handling arrangements. 

GRILLI — Former Sonora resident Robert Grilli, 84, of Santa Clara, died Aug. 29 in Santa Clara. A funeral Mass was planned for 10 a.m. today at St. Justin’s Church, 2655 Homestead Road, Santa Clara.  Interment Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Los Altos. Cusimano Family Colonial Mortuary in Mountain View is handling arrangements. 

POWELL  — Evelyn (Lynn) Powell, 87, of Jamestown, died Thursday at her home. Heuton Memorial Chapel is handling arrangements. 

ROLLERI — Part-time Angels Camp resident John Emmett Rolleri, 70, died Aug. 28 at his home in San Francisco. A viewing will be held from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Monday at Angels Memorial Chapel, 1071 S. Main St., Angels Camp. A funeral service will follow at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, 820 S. Main St., Angels Camp. Burial will be at St. Patrick’s Catholic Cemetery. A service will also be held at his Angels Camp home. Angels Memorial Chapel is handling arrangements. 

SCOTT — Frank Scott, 77, of Sonora, died Aug. 24 at Lincoln Square Post Acute Rehabilitation in Stockton. A celebration of life will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. Sept. 14 at the Bud Castle Gym at Sonora High School. Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
