Discrimination is not a right

To the Editor:

Mary Anderson-Wisehart in her letter July 12 asserts that gay marriage has “already threatened our religious freedom.”

If anyone discriminated against Ms. Anderson-Wisehart’s religious freedom, every atheist I know would be on her side in the blink of an eye. But religious freedom is not threatened by laws against discrimination. Everyone has the freedom but that freedom is not a right to discriminate against others.

If people want to live their lives the way they want, what business is it of mine — or yours, or hers? Couples who cannot conceive (even though they are heterosexual, it happens!) can adopt children and raise them just as well. It simply doesn’t matter whether the parents have sexual intercourse like mommy and daddy or not (hint: kids don’t usually know and don’t care). All kids have the same chances of growing up, as long as their parents love them and care for them. This is not a function of sexuality. Love is love.
