Kevin Dennis Foust

Jan. 1, 1967 — June 10, 2013

Hathaway Pines resident Kevin Dennis Foust died June 10 at his home. He was 46.

Mr. Foust was born in the Bay Area to Cynthia and Dennis Foust.

He graduated from Castro Valley High School in 1985 and attended Chabot College and College of the Siskiyous. 

He apprenticed in construction with Pete Radovich. The training allowed him to open his own business, Wildwood Termite Control in Hathaway Pines. 

He enjoyed hiking, fishing and skiing.

Mr. Foust is survived by children, Skylar, Hunter and Ryder Foust, all of Arnold; his mother and stepfather, Cynthia and Tom Brown, of Rio Vista; his father and stepmother, Dennis and Janet Foust, of Hayward; his siblings and their spouses, Christina and Joe Cullins, of Ripon, and Kenneth and Lisa Foust, of Avery; and three nieces

A memorial service has been held. 

Angels Memorial Chapel handled arrangements.

Helvi Irene (Wallace) McFarland

January 21, 1916 — June 10, 2013

Arnold resident Helvi (Wallace) McFarland died June 10 at Sonora Regional Medical Center. She was 97.

She was born in Embarrass, Minn., to Hugo and Sandra Wallace. 

She married Matt Johnson in Minnesota in 1933. They moved with their two children to El Cerrito in 1941. 

She was as a mother and homemaker most of her life but also worked part-time jobs.

She and her husband moved to Arnold in 1969 along with their daughter, Margie, and her family.

She worked at Hazel Fischer Elementary School in White Pines for several years.

Mr. Johnson died in 1979. Three years later she married Lloyd McFarland.

Mrs. McFarland enjoyed cooking and baking. She also enjoyed babies, the outdoors and traveling.

She was a charter member of Independence Hall Quilters and was active in the Pinebrook subdivision. She served on the board of directors for both.

Mrs. McFarland was preceded in death by her parents; son, Melvin Johnson, in 1951; first husband, Matt Johnson; second husband, Lloyd McFarland; sister, Nellie Palmieri; son-in-law, Wade Oswald; and one niece.

She is survived by her daughter, Margie Oswald, of Arnold; grandchildren and their spouses, Mark and Kathleen Oswald, of Hathaway Pines, and Lynda and Howard Stohlman, of Arnold; five great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

George David Pollock

Dec. 4, 1927 — June 14, 2013

Angels Camp resident George David Pollock died June 14 at his home in Foothill Village. He was 85.

Mr. Pollock was born in Pennsylvania to George and Anne Pollock. 

He served in the U.S. Navy and was a gunner’s mate on the USS Henderson. He was honorably discharged in 1947 as seaman second class and received a commendation from President Harry S. Truman. 

He married Mary Lantz in Pennsylvania in 1946. They moved to California in 1951.

He built a cabin in Avery in 1959 and moved from San Francisco in 1969.

He worked as a window washer on some of the tallest buildings in San Francisco and also worked construction on several projects including the Spicer and New Melones dams. 

Mr. Pollock was preceded in death by his wife of 47 years, Mary Pollock, in 1993; and siblings, Jim Pollock, Robert Pollock and Margaret Grego. 

He is survived by his children, Shirley Harmuth and George “Butch” Pollock, both of Avery; siblings, Eleanor Gray, of Florida, and Mary Ann Crosby and Patricia Pollock, both of Pennsylvania; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
