(Hogarth) Hughes

Dec. 17, 1924 — June 24, 2013

Sonora resident Janet (Hogarth) Hughes died Monday at her home. She was 88.

Mrs. Hughes was born in Chicago to Cecil and Margaret Hogarth.  

She spent her life as a homemaker in Lafayette, the last 40 years before moving to Sonora. 

Mrs. Hughes lived in Sonora the past five years to be with family. 

She was a member of Mount Calvary Lutheran Church in Sugar Pine. 

She enjoyed reading, traveling and swimming.

Mrs. Hughes was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Robert Loyel Hughes, in 2005; a son, Robert James Hughes, in 2003; and a daughter, Elizabeth Hughes, in May. 

She is survived by her son, Matthew Hughes, of Hot Springs, S.D.; daughters, Margaret Koenig, of Pleasanton, Kaye Marchal, of Grants Pass, Ore., Virginia Benguerel, of Modesto, and Terry Storey, of Sonora; six grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. July 6 at Mount Calvary Lutheran Church, 24176 Pine Lake Drive, Sugar Pine.

Heuton Memorial Chapel is handling arrangements. 

George Raymond
‘Ray’ Stepp

Feb. 23, 1921 — June 18, 2013

San Andreas resident George Raymond “Ray” Stepp died June 18 at his home. He was 92.

Mr. Stepp was born in Hendersonville, N.C., to George and Jewell Stepp.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the South Pacific where he received training as an electrician. While stationed in Alameda, he met Peggy Werner, whom he later married. 

He worked as an electrician in the Bay Area before retiring to the foothills, which, his family said, reminded Mr. Stepp of his North Carolina home.

Mr. Stepp was named Calaveras County Senior of the Year by the State of California. 

He built the picnic tables for Mountain Ranch Community Park and Turner Park in San Andreas.

He was initiated into the Calaveras Masonic Lodge in 1988 and was a 25-year member. He served as an officer for six years and was given the Hiram Award in 1995.

Mr. Stepp was preceded in death by; and son, Garry Richard Stepp.

He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Margaret Lucille “Peggy” Stepp, of San Andreas; son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Paula Stepp, of Sandy, Utah; sister, Velma Beddingfield, of Hendersonville, N.C.; 11 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

A celebration of life will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church, 135 Laurel St., Valley Springs.
