Edward Jordan ‘Jody’ Armstrong 

Nov. 5, 1960 — May 31, 2013

Jamestown resident Edward Jordan “Jody” Armstrong died May 31 at his home. He was 52. 

Mr. Armstrong was born in San Diego to Edward Bruce Armstrong and Patricia (Huddleston) Armstrong. He attended Jamestown Elementary School and graduated from Lincoln High School in Stockton in 1979.

He worked as a pack guide and stock wrangler while working for Reno Sardella at the Aspen Meadow Pack Station and Kennedy Meadows in the early 1980s. He was an extra in many Western films produced in the area. 

He later worked at the Alderson Fence Co. for 16 years before starting his own business, Armstrong Fence in the mid-1990s. 

Mr. Armstrong enjoyed the outdoors and hunted and packed throughout the Emigrant Basin Wilderness. 

He was a charter member of the Emigrant Basic Pack and Social Club and participated in several trap shooting leagues. 

Mr. Armstrong was preceded in death by his father, Edward Bruce Armstrong, in the late 1980s.

He is survived by his daughter, Carolyn Mariah Armstrong, of Jamestown; his mother and stepfather, Patricia and Wesley Young, of Jamestown; siblings, Julia Armstrong Eck and her husband, Carl, of Stockton, Jarrod Young, of Lockeford, Jon Young, of Lodi; ex-wife, Karen Ross, of Jamestown; one uncle; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory can be made to the Hanot Foundation, 950 Lockeford, CA 95327 or the Emigrant Basin Pack and Social Club, P.O. Box 1583, Jamestown, CA 95327. 

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. June 29 at the Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Posse Grounds, 19130 Rawhide Road, Jamestown.

Darcie Rae (Pelzel) Penland

Sept. 28, 1962 — May 31, 2013

Groveland resident Darie Rae Penland died May 31 at her home. She was 50.

Mrs. Penland was born in Fortuna to Ben and Karen Pelzel. She settled in Tuolumne County 30 years ago. 

She worked as general manager at Down To Earth Construction Inc. in Groveland and enjoyed gardening.

Mrs. Penland is survived by her husband of four years, Mark Penland, of Groveland; parents, Ben and Karen Pelzel of Blue Lake; and her siblings, Stacy Reynolds and Kelly Tomlinson, both of Northern California. 

A memorial service has been held.

Blanch Penny (Michel) Snyder

July 4, 1943 — June 1, 2013

Lifelong Calaveras County resident Blanch Penny (Michel) Snyder died June 1 at her home in San Andreas. She was 69.

Mrs. Snyder was born in Turlock to Phil and Bernice Michel. 

She graduated from Calaveras High School in 1961.

She married Ken Snyder on June 11, 1961, and was a homemaker most her life.

Mrs. Snyder was a involved with Girl Scouts of the USA, both as a young girl and adult, and was a Calaveras County Junior Livestock Auction committee member.

She also participated in four-wheeling competitions and was a member of San Andreas Community Covenant Church. 

Mrs. Snyder was preceded in death by her parents. 

She is survived by her husband, Ken Snyder of San Andreas; children, Jeff Snyder, of Santa Rosa, Greg Snyder, of San Jose, and Tammy Otsmane, of San Francisco; sister, Trisha Michel, of Garden Valley, Idaho; half-brother, Bob Scott, of Burlington, Wash.; and six grandchildren.

A celebration of life will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, at San Andreas Community Covenant Church, 261 Treat Ave. A potluck luncheon with tri-tip prepared by San Andreas Fire Department will follow in the fellowship hall.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her memory to Hospice of Amador and Calaveras, P.O. Box 595, Jackson, CA 95642.
