Around 40 veterans are expected Saturday for the Purple Heart Anglers fishing event at New Melones Reservoir.

The vets will be treated to a day on the lake with local volunteers hosting the servicemen and women on their boats.

“There’s been a great outpour of support from the community,” said Melanie Lewis, of Glory Hole Sports, and event helper. “We’ve got more boats than we do veterans.”

The boats will launch at 7 a.m. from the Glory Hole boat ramp and are scheduled to return around 12:30 p.m. After fishing, the vets will be the featured guests at a barbecue at the Black Bart picnic area where all are invited.

“Anyone can show up, bring a dish for the potluck, and say ‘Hi’ or ‘Thank you.’ ” said Lewis.

Purple Heart Anglers is a non-profit organization and its sole purpose is “to serve the needs of the community and by serving those needs produce a program that aids in the healing of the wounded warriors of the United States military and their families.”
