Katherine Jean (Snyder) Huckaby

Nov. 5, 1932 — May 25, 2013

Sonora resident Katherine Jean Huckaby died May 25 at Alexander Cohen Hospice House in Hughson. She was 80.  

Mrs. Huckaby was born in Prague, Okla., to Joseph Fredrick Snyder and Versa Mae Snyder. 

She and her family owned and operated apricot orchards in Patterson until she married Roy Huckaby on Aug. 14, 1947.

Mrs. Huckaby taught school for 24 years. She spent eight years at North Meade Elementary School in Patterson. She taught first grade for 16 years at Mother Lode Christian School in Tuolumne after moving to Sonora in 1974. 

She worked as the cook at Christian Berets Youth Camp in Mi-Wuk Village for more than 11 years. She later worked only weekends since she also worked as a cook for the Clovis School District’s Regional Learning Center in Sonora, which she did for 10 years. 

Mr. and Mrs. Huckaby raised numerous foster children.

She and her husband shared many ministries, including in care homes and Pinecrest Ministry for over 36 summers.  

She enjoyed playing piano, singing and cooking. 

Mrs. Huckaby is survived by her husband of 66 years, Roy Edward Huckaby Sr., of Sonora; children and their spouses, Roy Edward Jr. and Faye Huckaby, of Rosalia, Wash., Fredrick Glen and Jill Huckaby, of Sonora, James Levene and Becky Huckaby, of Stevenson, Timothy Boaz and Janis Huckaby, of Sonora, Twilla Nadine (Huckaby) Robb and Arlin Robb, of Coeur D’Alene, Idaho, and Thomas Bradley Huckaby, of Sonora; siblings, Joseph Snyder, of Arizona, and Linda-Sue Snyder, of Modesto; 18 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. 

A celebration of life will be held at 11 a.m Saturday at Christian Heights Church, 13711 Joshua Way, Sonora.

Heuton Memorial Chapel is handling arrangements.

Carol Helen (Graham) Kraft 

Dec. 7, 1924 — May 17, 2013

Murphys resident Carol Helen (Graham) Kraft died May 17 at Mark Twain Convalescent Hospital in San Andreas. She was 88. 

Mrs. Kraft was born in Illinois to Madison Y. and Celeste (Lynch) Graham.

She moved to California in her late teens and entered the business world. She eventually became regional manager for Western Temp Inc., in the Bay Area for many years.

She married Mathew Kraft  in 1970 and was stepmother to his children Ricardo, Mark, Thomas and Mary Jane Kraft.

The couple moved to Sacramento and opened a dress shop in the mid-1970s. They moved to Arnold in the 1980s, and eventually settled in Murphys.

Mrs. Kraft enjoyed embroidery and quilting and entered into local arts and craft fairs. She was also a member of the altar society at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church.

She was very active in her church prior to her husband’s death in 2009.

Mrs. Kraft was also preceded in death by a sister, Alys Jean; and stepson, Ricardo Kraft.

She is survived by her stepchildren, Mary Jane Starks, of Sacramento, Mark Kraft, of Manteca, and Thomas Kraft, of New York.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. June 8 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, 619 Sheep Ranch Road, Murphys. 

Angels Memorial Chapel is handling arrangements.  

She will be inurned Hotel Sepulchre in Hayward. 

Nancy Moritz

Nov. 24, 1932 — May 11, 2013

Burson resident Nancy Moritz died May 11 at her home. She was 80.

Mrs. Moritz was born in Menlo Park to Thomas and Esther Marie (Kauti) Winovich and lived her entire life in California.

She managed a home yardage store in Brisbane for 40 years. 

While in the Bay Area she was a member of the Lyons Club, the Red Hat Society and a fire and police wives group. She also volunteered at a local youth center.

Mrs. Moritz retired to Burson in 1993. There she joined the Moose Lodge and the Wallace Burson Association. 

She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence “Dutch” Moritz in 1997.

Mrs. Moritz is survived by two daughters, Sherry Mortiz-Vaurs, of Valley Springs, and Cindy Hollinbeck, of Montrose, Colo.; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a brother, Warren Winovich, of Saratoga; and a sister-in-law, Maire Winovich, of Fremont.

A celebration of life has been held. San Andreas Memorial Chapel handled arrangements.
