Christopher Stephen Galvan

Nov. 5, 1946 — April 29, 2013

Valley Springs resident Christopher Stephen Galvan died April 29 at his home. He was 66.

Mr. Galvan was born in Oakland to Christopher Ruiz Galvan and Rose (Mateo) Galvan. 

He served in the U.S. Navy for four years, serving on the aircraft carrier, USS Enterprise.

He worked as a butcher for over 40 years and owned his own shop, The Butcher Shop, in Hayward, for the last four years before retirement.

Mr. Galvan moved with his wife, MaryJane (Anthony) Galvan, to Valley Springs 12 years ago for retirement. 

He was a member of Cruzers Car Club in Valley Springs. 

He enjoyed old cars, motorcycles, fishing, gardening, and collecting various items.

Mr. Galvan was preceded in death by his father. 

He is survived by his wife of 32 years, MaryJane Galvan, of Valley Springs; children, Paul Ray, of Bend, Ore., and Crystal Rose, of Castro Valley; his mother, in Oakdale; siblings, Joseph Galvan, of Castro Valley, Carmen Dillon-Carey, of Copperopolis, Mitchell Wayne Galvan, of Modesto, and Rochell Muzzin, of Tracy; and five grandchildren. 

A memorial service will be held at a later date. 

San Andreas Memorial Chapel is handling arrangements. 

Carl Ray Orpurt

Jan. 18, 1935 — April 25, 2013 

Former Jamestown and Don Pedro resident Carl Ray Orpurt died April 25 at Good Shepherd Hospice, in Sebring, Fla. He was 78.

Mr. Orpurt was born in North Grove, Ind., to Harold and Georgia (Newman) Orpurt.

He served in the U.S. Air Force, retiring as master sergeant.

Mr. Orpurt worked for Northrop in Saudi Arabia and later retired from the oil industry in Texas. 

He was a member of various Elks lodges and attended Masonic lodges wherever he lived, including Victorville Masonic Lodge 476, Scottish Rite Bodies and Stockton Al Malika Shrine, Los Angeles. 

Mr. Orpurt is survived by his wife of 45 years, Frankie Orpurt, in Avon Park, Fla.; children and their spouses, Carl Orpurt Jr., of New Jersey, Patricia Sweeton, of Florida, Steven and Patricia Orpurt, of Massachusetts, Edward and Kim Orpurt, of Jamestown, Timothy and Marcie Orpurt, of Chinese Camp; brother and sister-in-law, Rex and Barbara Orpurt, of Spring Lake, Fla.; sister and brother-in-law, Martha Sue and Lyn Carter, of Sebring, Fla.; mother-in-law, Eunice Marshall, of Avon Park; sister-in-law, Lou Ann Watson, of Avon Park; sister-in-law, Evelyn White, of Fresno; grandchildren, Bailey and Courtney Orpurt, both of Jamestown, and Tyler and Emily Orpurt, both of Chinese Camp and five other grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. 

A military honor service will be held in late May at Florida National Cemetery, in Bushnell. 

Morris Funeral Chapel in Sebring is handling arrangements.

Marjorie Louise (Pierce) Romitti

Jan. 17, 1944 — May 5, 2013

Tuolumne resident Marjorie Louise (Pierce) Romitti died May 5 at Doctors Medical Center in Modesto. She was 69.

Mrs. Romitti was born in Sapulpa, Okla., to Howard and Buena Pierce. 

She moved with her family to Columbia in 1949 for her parents’ work. She moved to Tuolumne around 1953 and lived there the rest of her life.

Mrs. Romitti worked for social services for 20 years before retiring. 

She enjoyed fishing, playing bingo and collecting antiques. 

Mrs. Romitti was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Romitti; and children, Darren Romitti and Cynthia Denton. 

She is survived by her children, Gary Denton, of Tuolumne; siblings, James Pierce, of Tuolumne, Benton Pierce, of Tuolumne, Hazel Clairine Bellar, of Jamestown, Marvin Leon Pierce, of Tuolumne, Judy Whyliko, of Sonora, Sandy Stout, of Oregon, Lonny Pierce, of Jamestown, and Rhonda Pierce, of Sonora; and numerous nieces and nephews. 

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Carters Cemetery, 19042 Cemetery Lane, Tuolumne.

Stella Mae (Treadway) Schroeder

Aug. 27, 1939 — May 11, 2013

Sonora resident Stella Mae (Treadway) Schroeder died Saturday at Avalon Care Center in Sonora. She was 73.

Ms. Schroeder was born in Ravenna, Ky., to Louis and Ora Treadway.

She married Daniel H. Schroeder in 1967 and moved from Dayton, Ohio, to the Sacramento area.

She lived there until 1980, when the family moved to the Bay Area, where she worked at several electronic companies and for the City of Milpitas until she retired.

The couple moved to Sonora in 2002 for retirement. 

Mrs. Schroeder volunteered at Sonora Regional Medical Center in the gift shop.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters; and a brother.

She is survived by her husband of 46 years, Daniel H. Schroeder, of Sonora; children and their spouses, Daniel and Alayna Schroeder, of Foresthill, and Danielle and Dave Burge, of Rocklin; grandchildren, Katie, Andy, Alison Burge, all of Rocklin, and Elliott and Easton Schroeder, both of Forest Hill; and siblings, Margaret Spivey, of Knoxville, Tenn. and Fred Treadway, of Bellbrook, Ohio.

A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Dambacher Mountain Memorial, 22394 Lyons Bald Mountain Road, Sonora.
