The Sonora Wildcat swim season came to an end on Thursday and Friday at the girls’ and boys’ Section Trials at Tokay High School in Lodi.

“We had a great meet at Sections,” said Wildcat head coach John-Jay Verhuel. “Although nobody made it to finals, everyone improved their times.”

Katherine Hohne led the Wildcat girls with two season’s best time in the 50 freestyle (25.92) and the 100 butterfly (1:05.63).

“Katherine had a great season and her hard work helped lead the team to a great year,” Verhuel said. “Katherine led by example the whole season.

The Houghton sisters, Marta and Tess, “had another great meet,” Verhuel said. Marta had a seasons best in the 100 backstroke and Tess recorded a time of 6:02.34 in the 500 free.

The Houghton sisters were joined by Kiana Arnold and Olivia Hurley in the 400 free relay and dropped just over 8 seconds off their season best.

“The 500 is a tough event, but Tess really likes it and is good at it,” Verhuel said. “The 400 free relay girls swam great! I can’t believe they went that fast. That was really exciting.”

The Wildcat boys got off to a good start with senior Cody Hansten swimming the 50 free in 23.01 and dropping 1.5 seconds off his season’s best in the 100 free (50.62).

Matt Scanlin was strong for the Cats in the 100 back with a 1:00.20.

“Cody had a great season,” Verhuel said. “He was a true leader in and out of the pool. And Matt’s hard work and dedication paid off. He was really happy with his result.

“The guys also had a great swim in the 200 free relay dropping more than four seconds. Cody was joined by Bennett Personius, Ian Burkhard and Owen Ragland and there time was 1:34.31. They all had fastest splits of the season. Its was great to see the guys compete at that level.”
