Opposed to Jimtown discount monstrosity

To the Editor:

The proposal to build a dollar store on Highway 108 in Jamestown is completely ludicrous. First, it is totally unnecessary — there are three retail businesses less than 15 minutes from Jamestown from which to buy cheap household items, food and clothes: Walmart, Big Lots and Dollar Tree! Second, there currently are so many retail buildings sitting empty in Sonora and Jamestown, that to build another is horribly irresponsible.

This plan of an Arizona developer and the Tennessee-based Dollar General discount store chain is totally inconsistent with the historic rustic and aesthetic nature of Jamestown and Tuolumne County in general. And of course, the developer and the corporation are insensitive and indifferent to our real needs (obviously) and could care less about defacing our beautiful county with their tacky 9,100 square foot store.

Further, the Gold Country is a tourist destination. People don’t expect to leave their strip-mall towns to go out to the country to see this unfortunate development. A chain discount store cheapens our image. It is offensive on every level. The fact that this proposal has even made it this far to the table is, frankly, scary.

Allowing for development of this nature would be a huge mistake and would mark the end of Jamestown as we know it, as well as predict the future quality of our landscape, in general, not to mention the quality of life in Tuolumne County.
