Connecting the dots on Bill Canning

To the Editor:

Thank you for the well written article (April 17) on the proposed Golden State Holdings, LLC.  development at the Pedro Wye. I think a few suspicions were confirmed for a lot of people regarding Mr. Canning’s interests.

Not surprisingly, Mr. Canning and Mr. Simning believe that the 80 units will “spur” prosperity.  Really?  Asking for special treatment (exceptions to airport safety rules, water rates) for the promise of prosperity.

Another set of dots people have connected are:  projects that do not pay their fair share … “spur” rate increases. In fact, a history of this sort of thing has led to TUD’s money woes and ailing infrastructure. Projects that petition TUD for a break in water and sewer fees are putting the monkey on the ratepayers’ back. Someone has to pay for the upkeep of a very expensive and unplanned system. Perhaps this is what Mr. Simning means in his DIY video blog: that he will show you how to “negotiate with municipalities” http://experiencesfromthestorefront.com/2012/04/ .

Clearly, Tuolumne County has water insecurities. If an area like Columbia is at capacity for water and sewer, it does not mean it can’t grow, but that the beneficiary should pay their fair share of any new infrastructure. Is the Pedro Wye where they want to put the effort? Perhaps Mr. Canning’s old Heritage West site at The Junction is a better fit.
