Highway 108 over Sonora Pass and Highway 4 over Ebbetts Pass opened fully this week. Sonora Pass was cleared at noon Wednesday and Ebbetts Pass was cleared 9 a.m. today — in time for trout fishing season’s opening Saturday in the Eastern Sierra.

Caltrans was able to open early as a result of a dry winter season. It is the earliest spring opening of Sonora Pass since 1994, when the pass opened April 13, according to Caltrans.

This is the earliest Ebbetts Pass has opened since 2008, when it opened April 15, though it closed again for maintenance and reopened May 9 that year.

Caltrans said Highway 120 on the eastern side of the Sierra Nevada is open to the Yosemite National Park entrance. Tioga Pass Road, maintained by the National Park Service inside the park, is slated to open in mid-May, according to the latest statement by the park service.

Highway 89 over Monitor Pass in Alpine County opened on April 10, about a week earlier than average.
