Dismayed by bullying at Summerville High

To the Editor:

I am a proud Summerville alumna, class of 2007. During my four years at Summerville, I experienced a remarkable lack of bullying and a remarkable amount of tolerance and student unity. The student body I was a part of was not perfect, but on the whole, was a wonderful community.

Imagine my dismay, then, to learn of the experiences of Beto Dieste and his family. I am absolutely heartbroken for him. I encountered Beto my senior year when I stage managed the school production of “The Music Man,” and though he was the youngest cast member by at least several years, his kindness, gracious nature, and professionalism in performance impressed me. Beto, in short, has done nothing to earn the vitriol hurled his way by his fellow students.

In fact, I think I am more disappointed in the students at Summerville today than sad for Beto. As a student, my school pride came not from our outstanding performance art program, or from our state championship Academic Decathlon team but from how kind and inclusive the student community was. If bullying is this bad at Summerville, I am afraid the Bears have lost what made them special.

I encourage my fellow Bear alumni to write in with their experiences of Summerville’s previously wonderful student community.
