Board of Trustees handled Gervin firing poorly

To the Editor:

The Yosemite Community College District Board of Trustees under Chancellor Joan E. Smith handled the dismissal of Columbia College President Dennis Gervin in a manner that sends a loud and clear message to the Mother Lode that this administration has absolutely no respect for residents’ concerns about their community college. The message targets the very people who are sending their sons and daughters to this college.

Articles in The Union Democrat have called the dismissal “mysterious.” Subsequent statements by the president’s attorney that his right to due process was violated are egregiously disturbing.

The March 13 “open meeting” in the Manzanita Building (really $10 million for renovation?) was a comedic charade. Someone had already been named acting president. A person who had a degree in education, had been at the college for a whole year and who hadn’t who had very little experience in the field of hands on education.

There are complaints of the lowers morale in history among the students and faculty who worry that they should “keep their heads down so they won’t be the next to go.” So, far of retaliation and low morale are good administrative policies for this campus?

Unfolding events at the college reveal nothing but a political power play in my opinion.

I say to you, Mother Lode residents, you elect the YCCD Board and I urge you to send your message back to them loud and clear.
