Roy George ‘Buzz’ Klein

Jan. 29, 1918 — Jan. 18, 2013

Sonora resident Roy George “Buzz” Klein died Jan. 18 at Avalon Care Center of Sonora. He was 94.

Mr. Klein was born to Roy and Ruby Klein at his parents’ home in Stent. His great-grandmother was Leanna Donner, a survivor of the Donner Party.

He was raised in Stent and attended Poverty Hill Elementary and Sonora High schools.

He moved to Stockton after high school graduation. There, he attended Schneider Vocational School and received a diploma in carpentry.

Ten days later, he enlisted in the U.S. Army. He earned several decorations and citations for his service, including the American Campaign Medal, American Defense Service Medal, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal and Good Conduct Medal.

He met Doris Louise Hamersley during his time in the service. The couple married and had one child, Donna. Mrs. Klein died several years later.

He continued his career in carpentry after leaving armed service.

He settled in Stockton where he met Hildred “Hilda” Matthew. The couple married and raised Hilda Matthew’s son, Michael McKown.

Mr. Klein worked as a millwright and carpenter in Stockton for many years. He retired to Sonora in 1987 and lived with his daughter and son-in-law.

Mr. Klein was a member of the National Rifle Association and he enjoyed fishing, hunting and raising flowers. He was known for his green thumb when it came to growing lilies and roses, his family said.

Mr. Klein was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Hilda Klein; his brothers, Fred and Robert Klein; and his first wife, Doris Klein.

He is survived by his daughter, Donna Modrell and her husband, Tom, of Sonora; his stepson, Michael McKown and his wife, Stevie, of Sacramento; his sisters, Louise Garrison, of Stent, Dorothy Ennis, of Jamestown, and Katherine Ennis, of Sonora; his grandchildren and their spouses, Ricky and Genna Modrell, of Sonora, and Jennifer and Dan McHoul, of Jamestown; four great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home, 225 E. Rose St., Sonora. A graveside service will be held 1 p.m. Monday at Sacramento Memorial Lawn, 6100 Stockton Blvd.

Ronald J. Maguire

June 7,1943 — Jan. 15, 2013

Groveland resident Ronald J. Maguire died Jan. 15 at his home. He was 69.

Mr. Maguire was born and raised in South San Francisco. He graduated from South San Francisco High School in 1961 and attended San Mateo Community College. He married his future wife, Judi, in 1967. 

He worked for the International Longshore and Warehouse Union for 39 years, primarily at the Port of Oakland, as a ship’s clerk. Mr. Maguire lived in Concord from 1974 to 2003 before retiring to Groveland, after travelling there years earlier.

He enjoyed the outdoors and riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle with his wife. He and his wife took many trips exploring the western states during retirement. 

Mr. Maguire was very active in the Pine Mountain Lake Community Association.

He is survived by his wife, Judi Maguire, of Groveland; son, Mark Maguire, of San Francisco; daughter, Jennifer Maguire-Barnes; son-in-law, David Barnes; granddaughters, Morgan Barnes and Lauren Barnes, all of Concord.

A memorial service will be held 12:30 p.m. Friday at the Evangelical Free Church in Groveland, 19172 Ferretti Road. Donations may be made in his memory to a charity of choice or Hospice of the Sierra, 20100 Cedar Road North, Sonora, CA 95370.

Johnny Martinez

July 30, 1944 — Jan. 23, 2013

Jamestown resident Johnny Martinez died Jan. 23 at his home. He was 68.

Mr. Martinez was born in Tucson, Ariz., one of nine children to Maria Espinoza. 

He was raised in Tucson. He attended Pueblo High School, where he was a state wrestling champion, family members said.

He moved to Crockett in 1960 and graduated from John Swett High School in 1962. He then met Gloria Encinias. They had three sons, Johnny, Paul and Todd Martinez. He worked at EMCO Distributors at this time. The couple divorced eight years later. 

He married Judy Scales in 1984, with whom he would raise step-children Mike and Maria Scales.

He drove trucks for two years before working as a general contractor in Fremont.

Mr. Martinez moved to Jamestown in 1996, where he bought land and built his own home. He worked at Walmart in 2003, when he became ill.

Mr. Martinez was preceded in death by five brothers.

He is survived by his wife, Judy Martinez, of Jamestown; siblings, Mary Martinez, of Santa Rosa, Rose Walsh, of Sonora, and Pete Martinez, of Arizona; five children, Johnny Martinez and Paul Martinez, of Rodeo, Todd Martinez, of Richmond, Maria Scales, of Stockton, and Mike Scales, of Lincoln; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and former wife, Gloria Encinias, of Richmond

A memorial Mass and rosary will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Sonora.

MUNOZ — Mary Munoz, 71, of Jamestown, died Monday at Avalon Care Center in Sonora. A memorial will be held 11 a.m. Friday at Heuton Memorial Chapel, 400 S. Stewart St. Heuton Memorial Chapel is handling arrangements.

RAJKNECHT — Michael Rajknecht, 60, of Sonora, died Tuesday at his home. Heuton Memorial Chapel is handling arrangements. 

ROBERTSON — Jack Robertson, 94, of Sonora, died Thursday at Yuba City Care Facility. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Feb. 21 at Murphys Masonic Temple. Heuton Memorial Chapel is handling arrangements.
