Snow businesses set to open soon

Leland High Sierra Snowplay will open for the season Saturday, and Bear Valley Mountain Resort will offer free lift tickets on its opening day Thursday.

Leland Snowplay, on Leland Meadow Road off Highway 108, sits at 6,300 feet above sea level and has 12 inches of snow. That may not be enough to open “tows” that take visitors to the top of the hill, but owner Lance Vetesy said he’s hopeful for more snow this week.

An all-day pass to Leland Snowplay costs $22 per person on weekends. It is open seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m, but will be closed on Monday and Tuesday of next week.

Meanwhile, Bear Valley Ski Resort will open on Thursday with free lift tickets “just in case” the world ends according to Mayan prophecies, according to a statement from the ski area. Season passes are now on sale.

As of Thursday, Dodge Ridge Ski Resort was monitoring weather forecasts, but had not yet announced an opening date.
