Murphys Sanitary gets new director

The Murphys Sanitary District Board of Directors appointed Joseph Fontana on Tuesday to fill the vacancy created by Patricia Davies’ Oct. 2 resignation.

The entire board changed over via resignations and subsequent appointments between July 2011 and Fontana’s selection at Tuesday’s special meeting.

Director Tim O’Flinn asked Fontana, 69, if he could complete his term.

“How long is the term?” he asked.

“Twenty-five years,” O’Flinn joked.

“I’m not sure if I’ll be alive in 25 years,” Fontana said.

Office Manager Cindy Nugent chimed in that each director’s term is scheduled to conclude in December 2013, because each is an appointed incumbent.

However, the Calaveras County Board of Supervisors is expected to vote later this year on a proposal to consolidate all special district elections with even-year general elections as a cost-cutting measure. That would push back each director’s term expiration by one year.

Fontana was the lone applicant for the latest vacancy.

He has worked for 35 years as a warehouse manager.

“I would like to bring fresh ideas to the board on how to meet 2012 regulations,” he wrote in his application for the vacancy. “I am also experienced in complicated management issues that are (affecting) the district at this time.”

The board is continuing to recruit for a new general manager. Julio Guerra, hired in January, resigned in August citing stress, but has continued on an interim part-time basis as a private contractor while the district seeks a permanent replacement.
