Victor Lee ‘Vic’ Haskin

April 19, 1918 — Sept. 2, 2012

Sonora resident Victor Lee “Vic” Haskin died Sept. 2 at Avalon Care Center of Sonora. He was 94.

Mr. Haskin was born in Lone Pine, Neb. 

He served in the U.S. Air Force in Europe during World War II.

Mr. Haskin worked as a maintenance supervisor for more than 35 years. He retired to Sonora and built a home more than 30 years ago.

He served was a member of the Aromas Baptist Church and was a lay pastor at Sierra Bible Church.

He and his wife spent several years in the Missionary Assistance Corps, serving in India and Honduras.

He enjoyed outdoor sports.

Mr. Haskin was preceded in death by three siblings.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Wilma Haskin, of Sonora; his children, Lee Haskin, of Watsonville, and Frances Haskin Hermanson, of Phoenix; his siblings, Neil Haskin, of San Luis Obispo, and Jean Kalar, of Grass Valley; his grandchildren, Andrew Mills, of Daly City, Carolyn Mills-Schwartz, of El Mirage, Ariz., Jennifer Dittbrender, of Eagle River, Ala., and Sarah Burkett, of Folsom; and eight great-grandchildren.

A memorial service was scheduled for 1:30 p.m. today at Sierra Bible Church, 15171 Tuolumne Road, Sonora.

Frank Ferreira Machado Sr.

Oct. 18, 1967 — Sept. 2, 2012

Sonora resident Frank Ferreira Machado Sr. died Sept. 2 at his home. He was 44. 

Mr. Machado was born in Stockton to Joe Machado Sr. and Norma L. Machado.

He moved to Sonora 15 years ago to be closer to family.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1987 to 1989.

He worked as a plumber for more than 15 years.

In addition to raising his son, Franky Machado Jr., he also helped raise Kayla and Robert Parr and Kevin Sullivan, the children of his fiancee, Jeanee Sullivan.

Mr. Machado was preceded in death by his father, Joe Machado Sr., in 2010. 

He is survived by his mother, Norma L. Machado, of Sonora, his fiancee, Jeanee Sullivan, of Sonora; and his son, Franky Machado Jr., of Sonora; and his siblings, Joe Machado Jr., of Artois, Dan Machado, of Soulsbyville, John Machado, of Sonora, Julie Sweatt, of Tuolumne, and Joyce Hellenbrand, of Canyon Country. 

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 19481 Hillside Drive, East Sonora.

Stanley ‘Stan’ Olsen

July 26, 1929 - Sept. 10, 2012

Sonora resident Stanley “Stan” Olsen died Monday at his home. He was 83.

Mr. Olsen was born in Hibbing, Minn.

He lived in Sonora for the past 34 years. 

He served as fighter pilot in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War.

He later worked for United Airlines for 34 years as a pilot. Mr. Olsen flew the Pacific as Captain and was based in New York and San Francisco.

He enjoyed music and was member of band during his youth. He also enjoyed the outdoors and fly-fishing in Alaska and California. 

He raised Labrador retrievers and setters. 

Mr. Olsen is survived by his wife of 58 years, Doris Olsen, of Sonora; his children and their spouses, Gary and Susan Olsen, of Reno, Nev., Karen Olsen, of Taos, N.M., and Roger and Kathleen Olsen, of Sonora; his grandchildren, Christopher Olsen, Erin Olsen, Egan Elston, Zoe Elston, and Johnathan and Candace Olsen; and one great-granddaughter.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Tuolumne County Humane Society, P.O. Box 830, Jamestown, CA 95327.

A celebration of life will be held at 5 p.m. Saturday in the garden at the Olsen residence.
