The host Sonora Wildcats volleyball team defeated Buhach Colony 3-1 on Thursday, 25-19, 25-16, 23-25, 25-8.

Sonora senior Mariah Armstrong had a match-high 10 kills.

“Losing to Ripon (on Tuesday) made me mad,” said Armstrong. “That loss to Ripon was frustrating for all of us so our coach (Kim Evans) stressed to us that we needed to focus more and that is what we did. We were mentally prepared tonight. A loss can become a gain. But, hopefully, it won’t happen again.”

Also for Sonora on Thursday, Shannon Friend had nine kills and Sarah Thompson seven. Friend had one block-solo and two block-assists, Aubrey Carter had three block-assists and Thompson one block-solo and one block-assist.

In serve receive, Bailey Henington had 17, Leah Dambacher 11 and Cassidy Knowles 10. Bella Bergamaschi had 21 assists, Maria Chacon 15 and Henington two. Maria Chacon had three serving aces, and Armstrong, Dambacher, and Angela Gardella had two each. Henington had 16 digs, Dambacher seven and Armstrong six.

“We did a great job of serving very tough tonight to keep Buhach out of system which means they weren’t able to get the ball to one of their big hitters,” said Evans. “I was very proud of the girls serving to very good zones on the court and making Buhach work very hard to keep the ball in play. We are working on our focus in each set and obviously we lost a little of that in Set 3. I’m happy to see that the girls raised their expectations and were able to come out in Set 4 and play the way we did.”

“Our team is young,” said Armstrong, “but it is very good and I think we’ll be really strong once we start our league play. I think we’re ready to go.”

Armstrong has been the top gun for Sonora this year.

“I think switching positions has helped me a lot,” she said. “I was a middle blocker and now I’m an outside hitter and so I’m getting more opportunities to swing.”

JV—The Sonora Wildcats junior varsity volleyball team defeated Buhach Colony 25-17, 25-18 on Thursday night at Bud Castle Gym.
