A 74-year-old man was arrested Wednesday after firing a handgun at narcotics agents who were raiding his Valley Springs home, according to the Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office.

Donald Madrid, of the 2400 block of Barbour Road, was booked into Calaveras County Jail at 8:15 a.m. Wednesday on suspicion of attempted murder of a peace officer, possession of drugs for sale, being under the influence of drugs while in possession of a loaded firearm and a misdemeanor charge of being under the influence of drugs, with an enhancement for allegedly being armed during the commission of a felony.

Members of the Sheriff’s narcotics unit along with the SWAT Team served a drug-related search warrant at Madrid’s home Wednesday, according to a Sheriff’s Office report.

Madrid allegedly fired one round from a handgun through his bedroom door as SWAT team members approached it, the report stated.

No one was hit by the bullet, and the Sheriff’s Office said Madrid was immediately taken into custody without further incident.

Sheriff’s investigators obtained a second search warrant in order to retrieve the expended shell casing as well as the fired bullet from the interior of the residence. They also found an undisclosed amount of methamphetamine and packaging in a quantity “indicative of drug sales,” the report stated.

Madrid was being held in custody at Calaveras County Jail on $516,250 bail as of Thursday afternoon.
