One person was killed and five others were seriously injured in car crashes across the Mother Lode since Friday. Cindy Conrad, 53, of Soulsbyville, died from injuries she suffered in a Friday afternoon solo car accident at Highway 108 and Soulsbyville Road, the California Highway Patrol said.
Conrad was driving her 2000 Honda east on Highway 108 at an unknown speed when she began to take the transition to Soulsbyville Road and — for unknown reasons — drove straight onto the raised island median, according to a CHP incident report. After hitting the median, Conrad’s car struck a wooden sign post and crashed into a traffic signal pole. The accident was reported at 4:55 p.m. She was flown by helicopter to Memorial Medical Center in Modesto, where she was pronounced dead the next morning. In a separate accident, a 43-year-old motorcyclist was flown by helicopter to Memorial Medical Center following a crash Monday afternoon in Valley Springs. Eugene E. Hughes, of Valley Springs, was riding his 2006 Harley-Davidson west on Highway 12 behind several slower vehicles at 3:46 p.m. He crossed the double yellow lines in an attempt to pass and swerved to avoid a car turning left, CHP said. Hughes struck the right rear corner of a 2001 Chevrolet Monte Carlo driven by Ana Hernandez-Baron, 23, of Valley Springs, and was thrown from his motorcycle, CHP reported. According to the incident report, Hughes was arrested for suspicion of driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs before being released to the hospital for treatment. He was in critical condition at the hospital Tuesday afternoon. Two teenage boys were hospitalized after being injured in a Tuesday morning car accident near Jamestown. The driver, age 13, lost control of 1996 Saturn while negotiating a left curve on Jamestown Road north of Golf Links Road, CHP reported. The car struck an oak tree and came to rest in a ditch at the bottom of an embankment west of Jamestown Road, CHP said. The 13-year-old suffered minor injuries and was taken to Sonora Regional Medical Center, while his 16-year-old passenger was taken to Doctors Medical Center in Modesto for major injuries. CHP is withholding the names and cities of residence of both boys due to their age. Also injured in separate incidents were Charles Anderson, 43, of Tuolumne, and Glenn Wasson, 85, of San Andreas. Anderson suffered major injuries Friday night when he crashed his motorcycle while attempting to flee from CHP officers on Tinnan Road, according to the incident report. He was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs and evading arrest before being flown to Doctors Medical Center in Modesto, where he was released later that night. Wasson was flown by helicopter to Kaiser Permanente South in Sacramento for major injuries suffered in an accident Monday afternoon near San Andreas. He was at the hospital Tuesday afternoon in fair condition, meaning his vital signs were stable and he was conscious. |
