The Sonora Wildcats earned a 14th-place finish at the High Sierra Volleyball Invitational in Reno. The two-day tournament was comprised of 36 teams from Nevada and California.

On Friday, the Cats opened with a 2-1 (24-26, 25-14, 15-13) win over Douglas High of Minden, Nev. The Cats scored the final seven points of Game 3.

Sonora then played Central Catholic and won in straight sets 25-9, 25-21.

The final match of the day was against Casa Roble and the Cats prevailed 2-0 (25-23, 25-22) and took first in their pool.

On Saturday, the Cats were placed in a tough pool and lost to Spanish Springs and Bishop Manogue each in two sets.

Sonora didn’t qualify for the top 12 and played a crossover match to see whether it would go into the King’s or Queen’s Division.

Sonora defeated a tough Reno High team 2-1 (25-20, 22-25, 15-13) to move into the King’s Division.

Just as soon as the Cats finished that match they found out who they were playing next — Oakdale.

The rival Mustangs started strong and cruised to a first set win 25-13. The Cats came back in the second to win 25-23. In the deciding third set, Sonora blasted its rival 15-4.

“I knew the girls were really focused in the second set and I knew the match was ours,” said Wildcat head coach Kim Evans.

Immediately after that win, the Cats played Ripon. Sonora earned a 2-0 win (25-19, 25-15) and advanced to play Enterprise for the pool title. The Cats fell 25-19 and 25-20.
