Sonora police are investigating the death of a woman whose body was found Monday on the railroad tracks off South Washington Street. The Tuolumne County coroner identified the woman as Jana Gregory, 43, of Sonora.
Tuolumne County Sheriff’s dispatchers first received a call at 3:30 p.m. regarding an unresponsive female on the tracks about 200 yards north of Highway 108, according to Sheriff’s Office reports. The call was transferred to Sonora police, who responded with emergency medical personnel and confirmed Gregory’s death, according to dispatch reports. Sonora Police Chief Mark Stinson said there were no visible signs Gregory had sustained trauma and that foul play was not suspected. Gregory had previously been reported to police as overdue, and one of her family members found her body, Stinson said. Stinson said he could not release any more information regarding the cause of death until an autopsy is completed. Gregory’s husband, Derek Gregory, said he didn’t want to comment because he didn’t want to interfere with the Sonora police investigation. |
