Why is water
so expensive?

To the Editor,

Something just isn’t right.

It is admirable that TUD is trying to cut costs, but something just doesn’t seem to add up.

My last water bill was for the amount of $129.66. When I looked at the charge for the amount of water I used, it was $10.44.

Where did the other $119.22 charge come from?

Base charge $67.90 (which is going to increase soon), and surcharge No. 1 and No. 2 for a total of $51.32. This is for two-person household who only use the water for cooking and showering.

I was in the Bay Area and asked several people what their water bill was.

Of the six people I asked, their total water consumption bills were and they said, between $80 to $130, and that was for water consumed and no surcharges were added to their bill. It also included their landscape watering.

When I was serviced by Matt Dillon Water our water bills were 75 percent less than they are now.

There is another private water area in Sonora, that has rates 50 to 70 percent lower than TUD. They are building a new tunnel through a mountain to suck up more of our Hetch Hetchy water for San Francisco.

TUD is installing new pipes where the service is just fine. And they are paying their employees an average of six figures, if the article six months ago was accurate.

Why is the water so expensive, when it is our water to begin with, and we chose to share it with a large part of Northern California?

I think we need more competition in the water supply business, and not have TUD buying out all the small companies in the area.
