Mark Twain St. Joseph’s Hospital named Craig Marks on Friday as its new president.

The hospital has been without a permanent top executive since Feliciano Jiron resigned in September amidst criticism after nearly a dozen physicians left the hospital frustrated with management, according to a grand jury report.

Patti Monczewski has served the hospital in an interim role since Jiron’s departure for a hospital CEO job in his native New Mexico.

Marks, 49, will oversee the main Mark Twain St. Joseph’s Hospital campus in San Andreas and its five family medical centers providing primary and specialty care in Angels Camp, Valley Springs, Arnold, San Andreas and Copperopolis.

Marks has more than 20 years of professional healthcare leadership experience in acute care hospital administration, operations and medical staff development, according to a statement released by Dignity Health, the hospital’s nonprofit corporate operator. Marks most recently served as president and CEO of Western Missouri Medical Center in Warrensburg, Mo.

“We look forward to working with Craig in San Andreas,” said Michael Taylor, Dignity Health senior vice president of operations for the Greater Sacramento-San Joaquin Service Area. “His focus on quality care, patient and employee satisfaction and growth will be a great addition to the hospital and the community.”

Marks has also previously served as president and CEO at South Haven Community Hospital in South Haven, Mich. and vice president of operations at Central Michigan Community Hospital in Mount Pleasant, Mich.

“I’m thrilled that Craig is joining our team at Mark Twain St. Joseph’s,” said Dr. William Griffin, chief of staff and chairman of the Mark Twain St. Joseph’s corporate board.

“He brings great insight about working at community hospitals and the important contributions they make to the public’s health. Craig’s leadership, intelligence and experience are most welcome.”

Marks has a master’s degree in hospital and health care administration from the University of Minnesota and a bachelor’s degree in hospital and business administration from Concordia College in Moorhead, Minn.

He has a wife, Andrea, and two sons, Ryan and Andrew.
