Two separate car crashes within minutes of each other sent a total of five people to the hospital Thursday morning. The entrance to Stockton Road from Highway 108 was blocked to traffic for nearly an hour following a four-car pile-up near Ponderosa Lane and Stockton Road shortly before 11 a.m.
Several vehicles were stopped in the westbound lane on Stockton Road for traffic because of CalTrans road maintenance, according to the Sonora Police Department. Arlene Sprague was driving a 2002 Chrysler Town and Country minivan at about 30 mph when she failed to see that traffic stopped in front of her and struck the back of the first car, Sonora police said. The impact set off a chain reaction involving a 2006 Toyota pickup driven by Nola Pettitt, a 1987 Cadillac Eldorado driven by Irene Garcia, and a 2008 Subaru Legacy driven by Brian Payne, Sonora police said. Five people were transported by ambulance to Sonora Regional Medical Center with complaints of pain. Sonora police said there didn’t appear to be any major injuries. California Highway Patrol officers also responded to a “non-contact hit and run” on Highway 108, which briefly blocked the roadway. A car was run off the road by another vehicle, which fled the scene, according to CHP. There was only minor damage to the vehicle and no one was transported to the hospital, CHP said. CHP and Sonora police each said they were still investigating both incidents. |
