Yosemite National Park announced a plan to buy 20 bikes for park employees to use while commuting to and from work.

The multi-speed touring bikes will be available for park employees to check-out in order to reduce greenhouse emissions. Park officials also hope the bikes will help alleviate parking congestion in El Portal.

The program was funded through the Sustainable Actions and National Parks Conservation Association, which gave the park $5,210 to buy the bikes, helmets and locks. Each bike is fitted with an odometer to track mileage and determine the impact the program will have on cutting pollution. The park’s other green initiatives include using an all hybrid fleet of shuttle busses, using smaller hybrid vehicles and supporting the Yosemite Area Regional Transportation System.
