A Sonora man died and two other people were hospitalized as a result of a Thursday evening collision near Moaning Cavern in Vallecito. Michael Ray Rogers, 20, of Sonora, was the backseat passenger in a 1993 Honda Civic that collided with a 2000 Ford F350 pickup truck on Parrotts Ferry Road, just south of Moaning Cave Road. He was taken by helicopter to Oak Valley Hospital in Oakdale, where he later died from major injuries.
California Highway Patrol said the Honda Civic was driving south on Parrotts Ferry Road toward Columbia when it lost control around a curve and collided with the pickup truck going north.The driver-side of the Honda sustained heavy damage and the truck came to a stop mostly down an embankment off the eastern edge of the roadway. The accident was reported about 5:20 p.m. Both lanes of Parrotts Ferry Road near the scene of the collision were blocked to traffic for more than an hour. The driver of the Honda was identified as Andrew Martin Willis, 21, of Angels Camp, who was taken by helicopter to Doctor’s Memorial Medical Center in Modesto with major injuries. The front passenger, Marcus A. Phillips, 20, of Murphys, had minor injuries but declined medical treatment. Kristi Ann Putt, 46, of Murphys, who was driving the pickup truck, was taken to Sonora Regional Medical Center with moderate injuries. CHP said the cause of the collision remains under investigation, but alcohol is not believed to have been a contributing factor. |
